Early Learning and Childcare Summit

Following the report of the Independent Advisor on Poverty and Inequality, (January 2016) the Scottish Government is convening an Early Learning and Childcare National Summit on 25th February 2016 to look at how best to deliver an expanded early learning and childcare service that plays its part in tackling poverty and improving lives. The summit will bring together key partners in delivering the promised expansion of Early Learning and Childcare to 1140 hours per year by August 2020.

Care and Learning Alliance’s Chief Executive, Valerie Gale, will be attending the summit which will:

  • update key partners on the Scottish Ministers’ ELC ambitions, policies & planning
  • discuss roles and responsibilities in the delivery of this transformative change
  • initiate discussions surrounding delivery challenges and how to overcome them
  • contribute to the development of innovative delivery models of ELC by 2020, including the co-design of a programme of trials

The provisional programme includes contributions from:

  • First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP
  • Minister for Children and Young People Aileen Campbell MSP
  • Naomi Eisenstadt, Independent Advisor on Poverty and Inequality
  • Julie Wild, The National Parent Forum of Scotland

The programme of childcare trials will include innovative models of Early Learning and Childcare delivery, with specific focus on 2 year olds, the most vulnerable sectors of society, high quality to reduce the attainment gap, and flexible provision to meet the needs of all families.

They will encompass a wide geographical spread, ensuring characteristics such as rurality are built into our learning from the outset.
